Educate. Advocate. Act Now.

During 18–24 November 2024, the Republic of Moldova joined the global initiative marking World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW).

In support of the slogan “Educate. Advocate. Act Now.”, an information activity was organized at the initiative of the Scientific Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance of the National Agency for Public Health (NAPH)and the Moldavian Biosafety and Biosecurity Association (MDBBA). On this occasion, Dr. Marina Lupu, PhD in Medical Sciences, delivered a presentation on “Antimicrobial Resistance” to students from groups 205 AMDL and 413–414 AM of the Raisa Pacalo Center of Excellence in Medicine and Pharmacy (CEMF).

In order to reinforce the information presented and to assess the risks associated with antibiotic resistance, a quiz entitled “Educate. Advocate. Act Now.” was organized by Maria Grumeza, professor of microbiological disciplines at the CEMF “Raisa Pacalo”.

Another activity supporting the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2024 slogan, carried out with the support of WHO, NAPH, and MDBBA, was a flash mob organized at the Republican Clinical Hospital (SCR) by students from group 205 together with the “Fortuna” volunteer team of the CEMF “Raisa Pacalo”.

The activity began with an informational briefing delivered by the students of group 205, who are laboratory diagnostics assistants, and continued with a dance performance by the “Fortuna” volunteer team from the CEMF “Raisa Pacalo”, aimed at attracting attention to the issue of antimicrobial resistance.

The overall objective of these activities was to increase awareness of antimicrobial resistance at multiple levels of society. Through education, advocacy, and action, the initiative promotes the implementation of best practices for the prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance.

Promoting Knowledge and Best Practices in Biosafety and Biosecurity Among Young Professionals.

On 7 February 2025, the first scientific event of the year was held within the framework of the Moldavian Biosafety and Biosecurity Association (MDBBA) in collaboration with the National Agency for Public Health (NAPH).

The topic addressed was “Biosafety and Biosecurity Aspects in the Activity of Resident Microbiologists”, presented by Arina Caradja, specialist physician from the Laboratory Services Quality Management Unit of NAPH, together with resident doctors Oana-Simina Iaconi and Agafia Cazacu.

The professional development of laboratory personnel involved in activities with biological agents in the fields of biosafety and biosecurity is essential and necessary for public health. In this context, more than 40 resident microbiologists from NAPH, as well as groups of students from the Raisa Pacalo Center of Excellence in Medicine and Pharmacy, participated in the training and learned about the importance of awareness, knowledge, and application of biosafety rules and standards in laboratory practice.

Laboratory biosecurity is fundamental for controlling exposure to pathogenic agents, protecting both personnel and the community against accidental exposure or release.

The event was opened by Olga Burduniuc, Head of Department at NAPH, who emphasized the importance of developing a culture of biosafety and biosecurity, as well as promoting knowledge and best practices among professional groups involved in the safe handling and transport of biological agents.

It should be noted that such training sessions for resident doctors and students will be organized periodically by specialists in the field of laboratory diagnostics in public health within NAPH, with the aim of strengthening knowledge and practical skills in this important area.

Workshop: “Management of Waste Generated from Medical Activities”

On 25 September 2020, the Moldavian Biosafety and Biosecurity Association (MDBBA) organized, within the framework of the International Medical Congress for Students and Young Doctors MedEspera 2020, a workshop entitled:

“Management of Waste Generated from Medical Activities.”

The workshop was attended by medical students and professionals whose activities are directly related to the topic addressed. The objectives of the workshop were successfully achieved, and participants gained practical skills and competencies in the safe handling of materials and equipment used in healthcare activities.

Workshop 14.11.2019

Training of young doctors in the workshop “Good practices in the handling of biological agents”.

During the workshop, trainings were organized for young doctors on biosafety measures for handling biological agents in the microbiological laboratory. Laboratory accidents were simulated and the measures taken to reduce the biological risk resulting from them were demonstrated.

Workshop 18.09.19

Training of young doctors in the workshop “Standardization of antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods”.

A correct choice of antibacterial treatment must be based on real knowledge of the sensitivity / resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. Thus, antimicrobial susceptibility testing is one of the most important laboratory procedures in terms of infectious disease management.

The young doctors were trained in the correct testing of the sensitivity of microorganisms to antimicrobial agents, the detection of resistance mechanisms, the reading, interpretation and reporting of results.
